Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 27, 2012.

Get your popcorn ready…
…because come Wednesday morning, you may not want to leave your house! Yes, the storm we’ve been waiting for all winter long may finally arrive tomorrow evening, with a heavy “mix changing to snow” event expected. This storm could be much more interesting in northern and central Wisconsin, because warm air may keep some of this precip as a mix or even rain early on, before colder air moves in and eventually changes it over to snow for everyone by Wednesday morning. With warmer temperatures expected to keep more of this as rain or a mix south, I suspect this is why southern Wisconsin is not under the same Winter Storm Watch that northern and central Wisconsin is under for tomorrow night through Wednesday afternoon. Snowfall amounts will vary greatly depending on where you live, but where this falls entirely as snow, up to a foot of snow is possible! And if this storm ends up disappointing you, fear not, as ANOTHER big storm is expected on FRIDAY! It took until late February and early March, but it looks like winter is finally here. Get your popcorn ready.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B-
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Low to Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy and windy with decreasing clouds and winds later today. Maybe a flurry this morning if you’re lucky.
Today’s High Temps: A little colder than yesterday with a high of 35. Wind chills probably in the teens during the morning. Stupid wind.
Today’s Winds: Windy from the west, decreasing later.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 30-35.
Madison: Highs 34-35.
Milwaukee: Highs 34-36.

Tonight: Increasing clouds. Lows near 20.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Cloudy with a mix of precip developing in the late afternoon. This mix gets very heavy tomorrow night and gradually changes over to snow by Wednesday morning. Snowfall amounts will vary greatly depending on what type of precip falls in your backyard, with the precip being more of a mix or even rain the further south you live, but parts of northern Wisconsin could see 9-15” of new snow and central Wisconsin 5-8”, before this thing moves away Wednesday afternoon.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the mid- 30s east-central, upper 30s south. Lows tomorrow night in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Becoming windy again from the southeast.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Snow diminishes in intensity Wednesday morning before gradually ending Wednesday afternoon. But if this storm isn’t enough for you, we’ve got another one on Friday which could dump more shovelable snow to Wisconsin. Light snow lingers on Saturday, maybe, then dry on Sunday.
High Temperatures: Just above 40 on Wednesday, upper 30s to near 40 Thursday and Friday, then 30-35 this weekend.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 20, 2012.
Posted by: HaleStorm, 01:48 PM GMT on februarie 20, 2012 +0
Some morning sunshine today, then a light mix of precip tomorrow.
High pressure provided an excellent mid- February weekend for us with lots of sunshine and mild high temperatures just above 40. This high pressure system has now moved off to our east, and clouds will follow shortly. Our next storm system moves through early tomorrow morning and will likely develop scattered snow showers starting just before sunrise. We could see an inch or so of snow, but cold upper-air temps may not be enough to keep it as snow with surface temperatures expected to once again get near or above 40. More chances at precip arrive Wednesday night and Thursday, then again Saturday night and Sunday, so it could be an active week for a change!

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Some sunshine this morning, but becoming cloudy shortly. Sorry.
Today’s High Temps: Similar to yesterday, near 41.
Today’s Winds: Breezy from the southeast.

Milwaukee: Highs 39-41.

Tonight: Cloudy with light snow developing toward morning. Lows in the upper 20s.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Light snow showers expected. The snow could change over to rain mid- morning before ending in the afternoon. We could see an inch or so of snow, but any rain could make it quickly disappear as well.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the upper 30s to near 40.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Breezy from the west.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: A busy week! Light rain/snow is possible Wednesday night and Thursday, then turning to just flurries on Friday. A big storm could be shaping up for Saturday night and Sunday, so keep an eye on that too.
High Temperatures: In the lower 40s Wednesday and Thursday, then in the low to mid- 30s this weekend. Next week could be colder though.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Low to medium

Forecast Recap: Light mix today, sunshine this weekend, bigger storm on Tuesday.

Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Becoming mostly cloudy with scattered light snow showers or flurries. The precip may change over to light rain later today, but colder upper-air temps will probably keep most of it as snow. Less than 1” of snow is expected.
Today’s High Temps: Slightly cooler than yesterday but still mild, near 39 east-central, just above 40 south.
Today’s Winds: Light from the southwest.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 38-39.
Madison: Highs 41-43.
Milwaukee: Highs 38-42.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Decreasing clouds, lows in the lower 20s.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Sunshine!
Tomorrow’s Temps: A little cooler with highs in the lower 30s. Lows in the upper teens.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Just a little breezy from the northwest.

Sunday: More sunshine! Highs in the low to mid- 30s.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: More sunshine early on Monday, but we could be looking at a big storm on Tuesday. I wouldn’t quite put away the kids’ snowpants and boots just yet, but the possibility of disappointment lingers as some of this precip could fall as rain instead of snow, depending on where you live. Wait and see. The rest of next week looks mostly quiet.
High Temperatures: Remaining mild in the 35-40 degree range.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 13, 2012.
Posted by: HaleStorm, 01:26 PM GMT on februarie 13, 2012 +0
Light snow later today, bigger storm Wednesday night?
A weak disturbance in the troposphere is developing some snow to our southwest across much of Iowa and Missouri this morning, and it’s expected that this snow will make its way to the southern half of Wisconsin by later this afternoon. We’re not expecting a lot of snow this evening, with an inch or less generally expected, but it may still annoy you if you’re on the roads this evening.
http://weather.unisys.com/nam/nam.php?plot=pres&i nv=0&t=4p

Of greater interest will be a new panhandle-hook-type low pressure system that has the perfect track to dump a bunch of snow on southeastern Wisconsin Wednesday night. If this currently-forecasted track holds up, the only thing that’s going to prevent a big big snow is that it also looks like it’s going to move pretty quickly, which could mean a fast 3-6” instead of a long-lasting 6-12”. Severe weather forecasts are always subject to change, so if this doesn’t pan out, please don’t arrest me. (see news article below the forecast).

Today’s Forecast Grade: B-
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Sunshine this morning, but clouding up shortly. Light snow may develop this afternoon from southwest to northeast.
Today’s High Temps: Near 29 again.
Today’s Winds: Light from the south.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 29-32.
Madison: Highs 29-31.
Milwaukee: Highs 30-31.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Light snow showers. Southern Wisconsin could see up to an inch of new snow, but east-central Wisconsin will probably get just a dusting to a half-inch. Lows in the lower 20s.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Clouds in the morning, then some sunshine later in the day.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the lower 30s. Lows again in the lower 20s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Barely noticeable.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Snow develops Wednesday night. Could be 3-6”, but the forecasted track and speed of the storm is of course subject to change. Maybe some light snow or flurries on Saturday.
High Temperatures: 35-40 Wednesday ahead of the storm, low to mid- 30s Thursday, then probably back to the upper 20s to lower 30s through our next weekend.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 10, 2012.

Weather Update blog 12 year anniversary!
Twelve years ago this week, in February, 2000, shortly after I left my first career as a Meteorologist at Weather Central in Madison, I started writing this Weather Update blog. It was originally emailed to four college buddies and posted on my previous employer’s Intranet, under the page “Webmaster Forecast,” and quickly grew to almost 100 readers. From 2004-2008, I added a games section to the blog, where readers would submit answers to popular game show trivia questions, and I kept track of the standings for each season (which went three months at a time, like a season, see?) I used to blog every weekday morning, Monday through Friday, but have since scaled back in recent years with my two kids taking priority in the mornings. However, I’m still happy to be reviewing weather models and maps twice a week for you guys, and attempting a little bit of humor along the way. Speaking of humor, if you don’t believe I was on the radio many years ago, here’s a couple examples of my radio segments on NewsRadio 1310 WIBA in Madison. I’m still annoyed I never got a copy of my radio bits which were actually sponsored. By a sponsor!

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Freak blizzard? It may seem that way at times, but don’t be deceived, this snow won’t last too long, and the wind makes it look worse than what it is. Snow and wind this morning. Snow diminishes to flurries this afternoon, but blowing snow will still be annoying even after the snow stops falling. 1-2” is generally expected, which will be enough to make the roads hazardous this morning.
Today’s High Temps: Colder than yesterday with an early morning high of 30. Temps will start falling this afternoon as cold air behind this cold front begins moving in.
Today’s Winds: Windy from the north.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)

Milwaukee: Highs 25-29.

Tonight: Clearing sky, which also will bring cold overnight temperatures. Lows maybe a degree or two above zero. That’s it. Oh yeah, and remaining breezy overnight, which will bring wind chills to around -15.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Clouds, sunshine and wind. And cold.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the mid- to upper teens. Lows tomorrow night around five above zero.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Windy from the northwest.

Sunday: Sunshine and a little warmer. And less windy, too. Highs in the mid- to upper 20s.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Maybe some flurries Monday evening. Light snow is possible Thursday with the heaviest of that possibly staying to our south. We’ll see.

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 6, 2012.
Posted by: HaleStorm, 01:35 PM GMT on februarie 06, 2012 +0
Mild again today, then colder. Still no blizzards in sight.
Our snowless February looks to continue for at least another week. High pressure will give us one more day of mild sunshine later today before more clouds and colder temperatures roll in tonight and tomorrow. We may see a few flurries overnight, but I’m not going to get excited about it. If you’re loving our grassy winter, you can thank our previous two winters which were way above average for snowfall. The universe has to balance out, so we’re staying well below average this winter to make up for it. Or maybe a butterfly flapped its wings in Colorado and altered the flow of snowstorms to our south and east. What do you think?

Today’s Forecast Grade: B+
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Some low clouds this morning, then more sunshine later today.
Today’s High Temps: Still mild for one more day with a high temperature near 40.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy and colder. Maybe another flurry south.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the upper 20s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: A colder breeze from the north this time.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: More sunshine Wednesday and Thursday, maybe a flurry Thursday evening and/or Friday, then more sunshine is expected this weekend. Maybe we’ll get some measurable snow next week Tuesday.
High Temperatures: Highs near 30 on Wednesday, lower 30s Thursday, then colder Friday and Saturday with highs only near 20 expected. We warm back up Sunday and as we begin next week.

Q: What will be the most interesting weather phenomena we will see in the next week?
A: Fog. Yep. Fog. Not that fog isn’t interesting, mind you. I mean, who doesn’t want to walk inside clouds? Cartoon characters do it all the time, and they seem to be enjoying themselves. And it’s not to say that there isn’t more interesting weather somewhere else. Just ask someone in Colorado or Kansas what their most interesting weather will be today, and they may make some sort of snarky blizzard comment while they scowl their eyes at you. As for us, the groundhog may think we’re getting six more weeks of winter, but to have more winter, you need to have had winter to start with, right? As for our remaining snow, goodbye, we hardly knew ye.
