The Getting it Right Conference is less than 1 month away! Portlight is partnering with Brain Dance and, of course, the Weather Underground to discuss shelter and transportation accessibility for people with disabilities. Help us bring together the disability community with those who respond in times of disaster, to dispel false information and facilitate discussion of the real needs of the community with respect to evacuation, short-term sheltering and sheltering-in-place. The conference will take place in Atlanta, Georgia June 3rd-5th at the Shepherd Center.

Our key speakers are Dr. Jeff Masters, Chief Meteorologist of the Weather Underground; Susan Dooha, Executive Director for the Center of Independence of the Disabled New York; Paul Timmons, Board Chair of Portlight Strategies and Alejandra Ospina and Nick Dupree, disability community activists. Michele Kaplan will share a short film on how the New York and New Jersey disability community fared during Sandy. A photo essay on the post-Sandy NYC by Syd London will be on display in the room. You will leave this conference with valuable materials and strategies that you can use in your hometown during times of natural disasters. Representatives from the American Red Cross, FEMA and NCIL will also play a huge role in the conference.

Conference registration is $395 per person, and includes 2 nights lodging, opening dinner, breakfast and lunch on Tuesday, and breakfast on Wednesday. We will be providing conference materials. Accommodations will be at the Hampton Inn, Buckhead. Registration without lodging is $145 per person.

Portlight is very excited to bridge the gaps between the disability and disaster relief community. So register today and we will see you this June!

Another truckload of durable medical equipment is on its way to New Jersey! WU members Paul Timmons (Presslord) and Ron Myers (Floodman) worked with the good folks at the FODAC warehouse yesterday, filling up the truck with scooters, power chairs and a host of other items for those in need. Through our NJ Needs Hotline, we're working with the FEMA Functional Needs Task Force, Catholic Charities and the Red Cross, for whom we'...

As we reported in our last update, earlier this week, Portlight has become a clearinghouse for local, state and federal agencies, including the FEMA Functional Needs Task Force - New Jersey, meeting the needs of people with disabilities left devastated in the wake of Sandy. At the request of the task force, we've established a hotline with a NJ-local number, and the requests for help are coming fast and furious. We plan to so...
