Central MD Weather Conditions

The heat we have been having, temps above normal these past couple days, is now coming to an end. A cold front movesthrough late Thursday bringing us weekend temps about 10 degrees below normal for this time of the year. The temps will be in the upper 60s to low 70s all weekend. The arrival of the cold front also brings us a good chance for storms forming ahead of the front.

TIMING: Rain will occur most of the entire day, with the bulk of the storms happening late morning and late afternoon. The activity should be out of the area late evening.

THREATS: the two main threats are hail and gusty, damaging wind. Tornado threat is low and I dont expect to see any formation.

I am assuming there will be a thunderstorm watch issued as the day progresses, but at the moment nothing is issued. Follow me daily on Twitter (@wxmanmd) for weather tidbits and information.

The tornado tragedy in Oklahoma deeply saddens me, especially for the loss of life of those young children. My desire to forecast and study storms was borne out of fear; but used now to help save lives so that we don't have repeats of last night.

How can we cope with the news of such a tragedy? On my Facebook page I have posted a reflection on this tragedy. Please share your thoughts with us on that page: www.facebook.com/lifesjourneyblog

Happy Mother's Day!!

Yesterday's storms were a bit more scattered and localized, but strong nonetheless. Below are some of the official storm reports from the local NWS. Harford Co received the brunt of the storm with a confirmed micro-burst resulting in property damage, and a trained weather spotter noted a funnel cloud (it's not classified a tornado until the funnel makes contact with the ground) in Baltimore City. PG, Montgomery and AA counties all ...

As the temps climb this morning our chances for strong storms later in the day increase. We have a cold front in WV which will cross MD later this afternoon. The front, combined with the heat and humidity, add up to our storm chance. Those east of I-95 are at the greatest risk for severe weather, but the rest of us in central and S MD are not immune.

As the cold front moves through the area the temps will again drop well below normal for this time of ...

This is just a quick note since there isn't too much to say on this system, unless you want the technical details. The temps will warm for us Wednesday in time for the arrival of a weak cold front. By later afternoon, maybe rush hour, we could see some thunderstorms. These storms will not be severe, although, always take precautions when lightning is present.
