Weather Summary

Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 15, 2008. A developing low pressure system will progress across the Mississippi Valley and along the Appalachian Mountains. This storm will carry a significant amount of moisture that will translate to areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms through the Southeast and lower half of the Mississippi Valley. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight chance of severe weather development from eastern Texas through Alabama. Residents in this region should monitor weather developments closely and be ready to take any precaution necessary.

Farther to the north, a cold front will sweep through the Northeast and instigate rain in the morning. Precipitation will diminish in the afternoon, only to increase in southern New England overnight into Friday morning.

Out West, a very large and intense ridge of high pressure will move onto the West Coast and bring another very warm day from the Northwest through the Southwest.

The Northeast will rise into the 60s and 70s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 70s, 80s, and some 90s. The Northwest will rise into the 80s, while California and the southwest will see temperatures in the 80s, 90s, and some 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 22 degrees at Shirley Basin, Wyo. to a high of 106 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.

Monsoon rains approaching Myanmar

Dr. Jeff Masters

The weather in the region ravaged by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar has taken a turn for the better today, after a low pressure system that brought heavy rains and 20-30 mph winds yesterday weakened and moved off to the north. This system appeared to be a threat to develop into a tropical depression yesterday, but interaction with land is hindering its development, and the low is no longer expected to become a tropical depression. Weather History:

Did you know that...

When you think of tornadoes, Alaska usually does not pop into mind. The only recorded Alaskan tornado to touch down occurred on this date in 1968 near Anchorage. Meanwhile, in the lower forty-eight states, another tornado at Jonesboro, Ark. killed 34 people.
